Breathing correctly is essential for singers. It may sound ridiculous, as breathing is an instinct, but singers need to be more mindful about where they are breathing from and how to control that breath. Follow these steps to help you improve your breathing.
Breathe from the lower lungs! Imagine a rubber ring around your waist, e.g. the diaphragm.
Breathe in whilst trying to push that ring outwards.
Always breathe in through your nose and out through both the nose and mouth.
Keep your shoulders relaxed, they should never go into a shrugging position.
Try to get rid of any tension, as this will be heard in your voice.
To ensure you are breathing correctly try the following short exercise:
Lie on your back with your hand resting on your stomach. As you breathe in your hands should automatically rise, and upon exhale they will fall. Try to think about this when you are breathing during singing.
