Buying a clarinet reed for the first time can be a little confusing. Here are our top tips to guide you through the process.
What’s in a name?
There are many different manufacturers of clarinet reeds and it can be confusing to a beginner. If you are relatively new to clarinet playing opt for a Rico or Vandoren reed.
Does strength matter?
It definitely does. As a general rule, beginners should be looking to use between a 2 and a 2 1/2 strength of reed. However be aware that even the same brand of reeds can differ, and no reeds are ever identical.
Buy in bulk!
Buy reeds in bulk. Always check the reeds to ensure there are no rips or tears, if so, bin it, as it will never work. Ensure the reeds are golden in colour as green reeds are too young and will not play well, sometimes these will improve over a period of time.
