If you are a beginner, just starting to learn the guitar, choosing a pick can be difficult. Don’t worry because our top tips are here to help.

The first considerations are shape, thickness, overall size and the material that the pick is made from. For example, if you prefer to play the rhythm, then a rounded tip is most appropriate but if you play lead guitar, then a sharp tip is preferable.

Picks are available in a range of different thicknesses, from 0.38mm to 1.5mm, check out our article on Gravity Guitar Picks. There are some guidelines to follow when choosing your pick, for example, thin picks are good for rhythm guitars, thick picks are great for lead guitar. Choosing your pick depends on the type of sound you are looking for and just as importantly, how it feels in your fingers.

The most commonly used picks are nylon or celluloid but other materials, such as wood and metal, are used to create special effects.

I have accumulated lots of picks of varying shapes, sizes and materials, I think its just something that happens when you broadcast to your friends that you’re learning Guitar, you start to be gifted picks, now I can have a good look at them and see what is for what.
